Bra Care 101: How to Wash, Dry & Store Bras So They Last Twice as Long
Your Bras Are Dying Faster Than They Should
The average bra loses its support not from wear — but from washing and storage mistakes. Elastic is the heart of a bra, and heat, agitation, and crushing are what kill it. Follow the routine below and each bra in your rotation can genuinely last twice as long.
How to Wash Bras the Right Way
Hand washing (best)
- Fill a basin with cold or lukewarm water — never hot — and a small amount of gentle detergent.
- Soak for 10–15 minutes, then gently squeeze the water through the fabric. Don't scrub, twist, or wring — wringing permanently stretches the band.
- Rinse in cold water until it runs clear.
- Press the bra between two towels to remove excess water.
Machine washing (when you must)
- Always close the hooks first — open hooks snag lace and other laundry.
- Use a mesh lingerie bag and the delicate/cold cycle.
- Skip the fabric softener — it coats and degrades elastic fibers over time.
Drying: The Step That Kills Most Bras
Never put a bra in the dryer. Heat is the single fastest way to destroy elastic and warp padded cups. Instead, reshape the cups with your hands and lay the bra flat on a towel, or drape it over a drying rack by the center gore — not by the straps, which stretch under the wet fabric's weight. In Lebanon's climate, air drying is fast anyway.
How to Store Bras So the Cups Keep Their Shape
- Don't fold one cup into the other. This creases and permanently dents molded and padded cups.
- Stand them up in a drawer, cups nested behind each other like files — or hang them by the center gore.
- Give them space: crushing bras under piles of clothing deforms the cups.
Rotate, Rotate, Rotate
Elastic needs roughly 24 hours to recover its shape after a day of wear. Wearing the same bra two days in a row never gives it that recovery window. A three-bra rotation — one on, one washed, one resting — is the single cheapest way to extend every bra's life. Building that rotation? Start with our daily bra guide and the Selene Violeta Bra in Black, and make sure each one fits with our at-home fitting guide.
When to Say Goodbye
Replace a bra when the band no longer feels firm on the tightest hook, when underwires poke out or twist, when cups stay dented, or when the fabric has pilled against your skin. No care routine reverses dead elastic.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I wash my bra?
Every 2–3 wears in normal conditions, more often in summer heat or after sweating. Washing after every single wear ages the elastic faster than necessary.
Can I iron a bra?
No — direct heat damages elastic and melts padding materials. A properly air-dried bra doesn't need ironing.
Why did my underwire poke through?
Usually a combination of machine washing without a lingerie bag and a band that's too big, which lets the wire shift and grind against the casing.
How long should a bra last?
With a three-bra rotation and cold washing, expect roughly 8–12 months of regular wear before support noticeably fades.
