Bra Fit Problems, Solved: Straps Slipping, Band Riding Up, Cups Gaping
Most women do not need a bra fitting lecture. They need to know why this specific thing keeps happening — the strap that will not stay up, the band that climbs their back by noon, the cup that gapes at the top.
Almost every one of these has the same underlying cause, and it is not the one people assume. Here is the troubleshooting list, symptom by symptom.
The band rides up your back
Cause: the band is too big. Nothing else.
The band does around 80% of the work of supporting your bust — not the straps. When it is too loose it slides up the back looking for the narrowest point, which drops the front and takes the support with it.
Fix: go down a band size and up a cup size to keep the same cup volume. Going from a 80C to a 75D is not "a bigger bra" — it is the same cup on a tighter band. Use our bra size calculator to work out your band and sister size.
Straps keep slipping off your shoulders
Cause: usually the band again, sometimes your shoulder shape.
If the band is loose, the whole bra shifts and the straps go with it. If the band is correct and straps still slide, you likely have sloped shoulders — a normal shape that simply does not hold a straight strap.
Fix: tighten the band first. If that does not solve it, choose styles with straps set closer together, a racerback or convertible option, or a fuller-cup style with wider straps.
The cup gapes at the top
Cause: the cup is too big, or the shape is wrong for you.
The distinction matters. If it gapes everywhere, size down a cup. If it fits at the bottom and gapes only at the top, your bust is fuller at the bottom — very common — and a moulded or padded cup will always leave a gap.
Fix: for that shape, a stretch-lace or non-moulded cup follows your shape rather than imposing one. See non-padded cups C–F or the A–B push-up range depending on your cup size.
Spillage over the top or at the underarm
Cause: the cup is too small — even if the band feels right.
Most women who spill are wearing a band too big and a cup too small at the same time, because the two errors partly hide each other.
Fix: go up a cup size, and check the band separately. A cup that is genuinely correct contains everything with no bulge at the front or under the arm.
The underwire pokes, digs or sits on your breast tissue
Cause: the wire is the wrong width or the cup is too small.
The wire should sit flat against your ribcage, fully behind your breast tissue, following your natural crease. If it rests on tissue instead of around it, it will hurt every time.
Fix: a larger cup usually brings a wider wire with it. If wires are painful in every style you have tried, a wire-free option may simply suit you better — see our wireless bras guide.
The centre panel does not lie flat
Cause: the cup is too small, nearly always.
The gore — the small panel between the cups — should touch your sternum. When it floats away, the cups are pulling it forward because they lack volume.
Fix: size up a cup and re-check. On some fuller or close-set shapes it never sits fully flat, and that is normal — but it should be close.
Red marks and grooves at the end of the day
Cause: a band too tight, straps carrying the load, or the bra is simply worn out.
Marks on the shoulders mean the straps are doing the band's job. Deep marks under the band mean it is too tight — but be honest first about whether you have tightened the straps to compensate for a loose band.
Fix: the band should sit level and firm on the loosest hook when new, so you can tighten as the elastic relaxes over months. If you are already on the tightest hook and it still rides up, that bra is finished.
It fits in the morning and not by evening
Cause: normal body changes plus elastic fatigue.
Your ribcage expands slightly through the day, and cycle, temperature and salt all change fit. This is why one bra worn every day fails faster — elastic needs 24 hours to recover its shape.
Fix: rotate three bras rather than wearing one. Wash gently and never in a machine on hot — our bra care guide covers this properly.
Quick reference

- Straps slip → band too big, or sloped shoulders
- Cup gapes → cup too big, or wrong cup shape
- Spillage → cup too small
- Wire hurts → cup too small or wrong wire width
- Centre panel floats → cup too small
- Shoulder marks → straps over-tightened for a loose band
